The Foundation for Hungarian Science Education – founded by Gedeon Richter Plc, Ericsson Hungary Kft and Graphisoft SE Budapest – has been presenting the Professor Rátz Lifetime Achievement Awards since 2001. The awards have since become one of the most prestigious honours in Hungarian science education and in public education in general. They are given out to teachers who play an outstanding role in promoting their subjects and in nurturing talented young scholars.
"So that we know not only the names of world-famous scientists, but their teachers as well,” is the motto of the Professor Rátz Lifetime Achievement Award, since when we praise the achievements of famous scientists, we often discover something about their teachers, who motivate their talented students with their guidance, perseverance and knowledge.

The purpose of the award bestowed by the Foundation for Hungarian Science Education is to pay tribute to those dedicated teachers who achieve outstanding results in educating the talented scientists of the future. The foundation’s board of trustees presents the HUF 1.2 million Professor Rátz Award every year to two physics teachers, two mathematics teachers, two chemistry teachers and two biology teachers. The foundation’s other objective is to provide special support for top-notch secondary school science education as the basis for the future scientific intellectuals.
