Gedeon Richter’s Biotechnology Plant in Debrecen has been awarded first prize in the category of “Research and Development Project of the Year” in the Emerging Europe Awards 2019. The award recognises R&D projects that have created new jobs by utilising highly qualified local expertise. The awards were presented in London at the headquarters of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Gedeon Richter Plc’s Biotechnology Plant, which plays a key role in Debrecen’s economy, was commissioned in 2012 in the Industrial Park in Határ Street. Thanks to substantial improvements made since then, the division developing and producing biosimilar products was further expanded in 2016, and a molecular biology lab was opened in 2018. After continuously developing its research and manufacturing capacity, the company decided to build a multifunctional office building. With these steps, the total investment in Debrecen now exceeds HUF 40 billion (ca. EUR 125 million). Richter’s strategic goal is to create a complex and competitive biotechnological product line that will help expand its portfolio of innovative products representing high intellectual added value.

One of the important factors among the criteria for selecting the winner of the award was that, in addition to its outstanding innovation activity, Richter focuses on retaining a highly trained and committed workforce in Debrecen by providing an inspiring and competitive environment for its employees.
